Georg is a Swiss designer, with a Bachelor in Product Design from Central Saint Martins and a Master in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship from ECAL.

His practice focuses on the re-use of discarded resources or objects and surplus materials. A big part of the value in his objects come from the uniqueness of the findings. employing sometimes unusual techniques to transform them into new purposes. He cross-references processes from industry and crafts, be it digital-manufacturing, construction industry or traditional techniques.

personal addition

My work reflects my fascination for the raw and pragmatic processes I witness in the construction industry and my admiration for skilled craftspeople, dedicated to one material or process. I seek opportunities in the resources I have at hand and am triggered by materials that others call “waste”.

The journey starts with the material and context it comes from then driven by the particularities of the processes used and the people who master them.

What nourishes the projects is the physical exploration of materials, linked with research that takes many tangents. And what I love overall, is the moment these become one in an object and a story one can share.

Project description

Fractions is an ever evolving collection of sensually burnt wood objects. Each piece is an individual response to the shape and structure of a given off-cuts. With alterations to the raw material kept to the bare minimum, function is given by punctual joinery whilst tactility and longevity are enhanced by fire.

Yakisugi (Japanese: Burnt cypress) has for centuries been used in architecture to preserve and accentuate wooden structures. Our unique take on it uses the erosive qualities of fire to intentionally soften certain sharp lines whilst still preserving others.
