MEISTERSTRASSE JAPAN

JAPAN has been fashionable in Europe. For more than 150 years.

The Vienna World Exhibition in 1873, at which Japan presented itself in Europe for the first time on a significant scale, laid the foundation for a ‘cult of Japan’, which quickly led to Japonism as a taste-forming broad current throughout Europe.

For it was the arts and crafts products that initially made the greatest impression in Europe and so the starting signal was given for an intensive intercultural dialogue in this field.

With the founding of MEISTERSTRASSE JAPAN, we are continuing this dialogue, no, more:

Together with our partner tci lab, we are presenting Japanese craftsmanship in all its facets: from simple, stylistically clear ceramic objects for everyday use to enchanting lampshades made of handmade washi paper and artistic lacquerware of the highest possible quality.

CRAFTS TRAVEL JAPAN – PASSING THE LIGHT

We invite you to visit selected workshops and manufactories of MEISTERSTRASSE JAPAN in person, to look over the shoulders of the master craftsmen at work, to learn more about the working techniques, the regional raw materials, but also the embedding of the respective craft tradition in the region itself.
